The Theory of Moral Sentiments
We are all seeking validation. Weare hardwire to seek validation. And what's happened in modern times is that when the theory of moral sentiments was written, obviously it was written with a small group of people in mind. It becomes really easy to go on line to find an echo chamber of people who happen to believe whatever frame you view the world through. The incentives are alligned towards raising your status within this little in group. Increasingly, the way to do that is to get more and more shrill,. Whether you're attacking the other side, or whether you're signalling your own virtue - which can lead to polarization.
