Sulla's new found ambition drove him to reach for election to the higher magistracies in the state. The romans controlled the entire north coast of the mediterranean, italy, illyria, pirus, greece, macedonia, thrace, asia minor and large portions of north africa too. And now, with these northern invaders vanquished, rome seemed like it was facing no serious threat to its security. Sulla ran for pretor but after finding he had a magic touch on military campaigns, he smacks into a wall of reality that is the entrenched roman political establishment.
