Shylock incarnates and propagates all of the vilest anti-Semitic stereotypes that have come down to us. I think if the Merchant of Venice were by any other author, it wouldn't now be staged. The trial scene is a more powerful anti-Semitic text than the protocols of the Elders of Zion. There is nobody who comes out of a really good production of King Lear without feeling drained.
