The Power of Memories
Singing other people's songs is like memorizing other people's words and acting them. It gives you an access point to then start making things up out of your own core. So I would imagine it's the same thing, but I spent a lot of time memorizing all kinds of texts from Carol Churchill to Kenneth Lonergan to Shakespeare to check off. The rhythms got into me and the kind of desire to write came out of that. And then directing is just, I still feel like I'm an elementary speaker. That's the language. "I get so inspired by artists that have quite a lot of self-doubt or some like darkness to it," she says.
