There was a tipping point somewhere in the past 10, 15 years where makers got really into creating and sharing. Utilizing the patterns that opens our software has gone through. CERN open sourcing their hardware designs is just amazing. You can go and look at a nuclear grade multi meter design if you want to. It's pretty amazing.
