In 1900, there was a police bullet that was put out identifying Mary Carr as one of the most dangerous women in London and queen. They called her queen of the 40 thieves. She also changed the way that women were seen and valued at the time. So becoming a hoister was an option for women who wanted more than society would allow them to have. But they felt like that was a risk worth taking because like, you know, it's either that or starve to death.
