In many cases I think the world was just smaller and it was easier to stand out in the company. Today, you've got to do whatever whatever you can under the sign to stand out. The only mistake first time founders make is they try to get the world to care about them. What they should be doing is trying to attach themselves to the thing the world already cares about. It's unbelievable how positively people perceive you if you are doing good in the world.
