Episode CCIV - Octavian's Illyrian War

Emperors of Rome

CHAPTER

Dio and the Illyrians

Appian's account seems to have drawn very heavily on Octavian's own account of the campaign. That gives us a really interesting perspective, but it probably makes it slightly less reliable than we might like. Appian's text is quite interesting in itself because he talks about Roman history from the point of view of different ethnicities. It goes right back to the third century when the Romans first started interacting with Illyrians at various wars that they had.
