The Importance of the Military in America's Grand Strategy

The military by most measures has a losing record since World War II, but it seems in many ways that the whole does exceed the sum of the parts. The military itself is a pretty mediocre instrument of trying to go out and advance democracy or human rights as we've all been reminded with the Iraq and Afghanistan experiences this century. So you don't really want to be thinking of it as your active tool for making the world better so much as the instrument for keeping what we've got that's good already as a solid foundation from which to build further using non-military tools.
