In the 19 twenties in new york, there was another totally high tech spin on this entire fast dining phenomenon well under way. These automats were very modern seeming, even even futuristic, self service restaurants. You'd id your tray up, you'd select the plate that looked good to you, and then you would place one or two coins,. usually nickels, into a slot, turn the crank... And then lift the window and pull the plate of food out.
