Physicists had been reading about and thinking about how to get energy out of the atomic nucleus for a long time. The only way that the nucleus had been studied up to 1938 was by bombarding it with protons, which have the same electric charge as the nucleus positive charge. So you had to accelerate them to high speeds with various versions of the big machines that we've all become aware of since then.
