ITER has become the Gothic cathedral of our time, a beautiful but immensely complex structure that we pray will help us find salvation from our energy and climate woes. We have to escape this mindset of looking at scientific research as some kind of return on investment in the main. If we make it big, then we do make it really big. But failure is the default mode.
