Sankaracharya called this a kind of unique mental psychological mechanism, we call it Maya. Johann Godly Fiste wrote that the form hides the being from us and forms constitute this world. So, idam invedanta means all that you see with your eyes, the mountains, the valleys, and our own empirical happiness and unhappiness. All these are different names and forms, passing, changing experiences which you wrongly interpret to be unchanging and permanent experiences.
