How to Get Hooked - The Four Basic Steps
Hook is an experience to connect the user's problem to your product with enough frequency to form a habit. There are two kinds of triggers: external and internal. External triggers are pings, the dings, the rings, anything in your outside environment that tells you what to do next. Internal trigger is an uncomfortable state that the user seeks to escape boredom or stress. The third step is the variable reward phase. And this is really what's different about the Hook model than you would find with habits as described by,. you know, countless books. They don't include this very, very important step, which is specific to product design.
