The Nixon Summit and the Vietnam War
In the late 1960s, both China and the United States saw a need for improved relations. Kissinger didn't get any concessions or promises of possible help ending the Vietnam War. This is the cloud that hung over everything at this time. For the Americans, re-established in relations with China, promised to put pressure on the Soviets.
