"I think that what this film is telling us is all of the worlds that they have gone and seated, these revolting engineers are going to go and destroy one after another in a cyclical fashion," says director. "It ties into Lovecraft's idea of a culture that we see at its prime, and then we see it decay." The star maps that are found all over Earth are telling us to go to this place, but then you go to the place. And the civilization that had told you to go there is now gone, and what has replaced it is hostile to us.
