The media have pretty effectively smeared both Gordon Brown and Ed Miliband as well. They probably think labor would do better at selling spending cuts than the conservatives. So it might be possible for them to narrow laborously quite significantly. But I think they must know that the space for backing an extremely unpopular policy is small.
