The Importance of Public Institutions in American Higher Education

America still relies for the formation of its elite on clerical institutions, these survivals of our Protestant past. Harvard, Yale Princeton, Stanford is different, but the basic tone is set by those old IVs. They are heavily involved with the government unlike say the right wing Hillsdale College which receives no government funding. We should maybe think about alternate models.
