Behind the Bastards

CHAPTER

The Popular Front and the Spanish Civil War

The murder of a former finance minister, jose calvo sotello, was the trigger for the war. Sotello had been an exile from 19 31 to 34, but returned to become a leading right wing figure associated with the spanish fascists. One scholar writes that everyone got the message to abandon the ballot box and take up arms. The c e d a's youth movement collapses. So like the young republicans, basically they collapse overnight, and they all join the falange. And at the same time, another left wing group of left wing people murders a popular right wing politician,. so this all kind of snowballs into the start of the civil war.
