The Grave Digger and the Hedge Layer
I wanted to celebrate each of those people who, not only the people who'd helped directly, but people I'd talked to and lived close to. So in a way, that was a direction in which the book went, that there is in each chapter a figure in the landscape. People don't remember the grave digger and the pig man and the hedge layer and that's what I wanted to do in the book was remember them. And I wanted to save their stories and to memorialize them because in history, they're the sort of people who don't get their stories told.
