Russia has a mix of modern communication satellites in geostationary orbit but also older technology that is still in use. It seems like the Russian troops, what we gathered during the conflict as it went on was that it was probably a disconnect somewhere in the system concerning the training of the armed forces. The data-related satellites are to link data from satellites to ground stations and this will then enhance the possibility of direct communication.
