The plot failed spectacularly on multiple fronts. The murder trust had insured Mike under a false name. They created Nicholas Mallory and they'd planted a fake a fake ID card with the name Nicholas Mallory on the second victim, Joseph Murray. That kind of thing could crack the whole plot wide open.
