Mammoth is a fun name and it's an actual word that people know, so why not Mac OS Mammoth? I would be so mad if they called it Menducino because I just don't like that. The fact that it has an S on the end just did not work. So the company that chose Mavericks may choose literally anything because Mavericks just sounded bad.
