I'm not at all opposed to regulatory oversight. I think it's required in a world where there are some really bad things that needed addressing. The mandatory sentencing guidelines for judges are absolutely ridiculous because they hobble the judge from using their common sense and their ability to weigh the situation of this particular instance. In 1971, a married woman could not get a credit card in her own name if she didn't have a letter signed giving her permission from her husband. How crazy. I was 11 years old when that happened. And I often use my own year of birth, 1960, as an example of how much America has changed for the better.
