The German Tradition of Starting School

August is the time of year when children return to school in germany and switzerland. Children are given a so called shul tuter or suka tuter aly, which is a big cone shaped cardboard bag that holds sweets as well as crayons and pencils. In almost every german speaking household, you will find photos of several generations of proud schul an finger holding their new satchels. The tradition of the shtuter dates back to the nineteenth century.
