The crimean war began in 18 53 and saw britain and france supporting the ottoman empire against russia. It was the first full blown great power conflict since the treaty of vienna. As it turns out, its military, government, economy all were in an appalling state. The failure of the russian army in the crimean war was especially ironic givin czar nicholas's own presentation of himself as essentially a military dictatorship.
