Red Yeast Rice Is a Statin, Is It Safe?

The first three statins on the market, you can group statins into what we call natural statins or synthesize statins and make them up in the laboratory. The more synthetic statins that were later developed turned out to be a bit more potent because they could engineer the statin molecule. Tom Zoellner: I was probably the number one prescriber of statins when they hit the market in New Jersey in 1980. He says he's seen patients who come in taking red yeast rice whose LFTs are sky high but don't know why.
