The Importance of Seizing Crimea
Putin took Crimea for a very specific reason in order to distract the attention of the Russian people from the Maidan revolt. He was afraid, especially after the protests in 2011 in Moscow, that the example of what happened in Kyiv could be imitated in Moscow. And it worked. The Russian public as a whole stopped paying attention to what was happening on the street in Kyiv and gave itself over to mass euphoria over the annexation of Crimea. It pushed Putin's popularity to, if I'm not wrong, 82%.
