The Importance of Quality

Scott asks if it's necessarily bad to base your identity on cultural products. Adorno would call this the fetish character in culture, and he was not fond of it. But despite being a slightly crotchety Adornian, I don't really think it is. Not all the time anyway. Unfortunately, the crucial determining factor, as un-sexy and unscientific as it may be, is an attention to quality. When too many people like things simply because they're there, the quality of those things will inevitably fall off a cliff.
