Blockchain Technology - How Much Trust Do You Have to Give to Make the System Cost Effective?

The SFI has started a bit of a program and understanding what's going on in the blockchain world. My own view is that the attempt to achieve trustlessness at the foundation of many public blockchains like ether and Bitcoin add a essentially insurmountable obstacle to making them sufficiently efficient to scale. What we really need is some meta engineering, which decides for a given purpose, how much trust do we have to give to some entity to make the system cost effective? I mean, we know Bitcoin is ridiculously expensive, like 5% of its net worth per year in mining. We've been actively engaged in this.
