Code quality is how long it takes a developer to understand a piece of code, not just what it's doing. It can very rapidly become extreme technical debt if developers aren't able to understand the code and build on it. Study after study has found that writing high quality code pays off in weeks rather than months or years. A lot of engineers are running lean at large companies so they don't necessarily have a budget for engineering education. But regardless of how much experience you have, no matter where you're coming from, coding should always be your first priority.
