The Origins of Magic in the Roman Empire

The word Magia appeared in Latin for the first time in the first century BCE. Ancient Roman law usually focused on the effects of magic rather than on magical acts themselves. The sense of superstition as an improper, misinformed religion would be passed to Christian Europe along with Christianity. But still, like in Europe centuries later, there would eventually be criminal punishments for witchcraft in Rome.
