The US is beginning to run out of its own domestic reserves of crude oil. The Caribbean very quickly becomes one of the major refining hubs in the world. Hesse refinery on St. Croix became a massive sprawling refinery responsible for something like almost 10% of the national consumption of oil. It single-handedly set pricing of gasoline on the East Coast, all of which is happens on St.Croix.
