The Maker: A Short History of Cartography
It's a little bit of a later story. It comes from that collection I mentioned called the maker, where they're all like really short like this. In time, those unconscionable maps no longer satisfied. The following generations who were not so fond of the study of cartography as their forebears had been saw that the vast map was useless. There are chattered ruins of that map inhabited by animals and beggars in the deserts of the West still today. But it does the thing that my favorite of Kafka's writing does where it feels allegorical but the allegory never quite lands.
