The Sea Is Not a River
The tide is full, the moon lies fair. Those are the opening lines of matthew arnold's anguished poem, dover beach. Arnold believes he hears the same eternal note of sadness that sophocles must have heard long ago on the egean. On those rare occasions when i do risk a paddle, i cannot help imagining that the element i dipped my toes into is the self same wine dark sea that brought odysseus back to ithaca.
