Schmidt's Thoughts on the Left
Schmidt was born in 18 88 of a provincial roman catholic family in the rhineland. He studied jurisprudence, which then included political science and political philosophy. His early writing expressed some doubt about positivism - an approach to law favoured by liberals. The war firmly set his thought on the path it was to take for the rest of his long life. Schmidt volunteered, but an injury, served in a non combat capacity in berlin. Here he associated not with the prussian elite, but with a more bohemian crowd.
