And of course, at Mardi Gras, as you pointed out, in New Orleans, it becomes a thing. You can hear it in the 1914 track St Louis Blues by WC Handy. In 1940, Duke Ellington uses it in Conga Brava. One of the earliest proto-rock and roll artists, Sister is at a Tharp, uses it, and did it in it rain in 1948.
