Dr. Fortnier was a veneeriologist and a syphallologist, he spent a lot of time examining people's genitals. He came across these conditions that he compiled into a series of 5 case reports. The condition became known as Fortnier's gangrene. It is idiopathic, meaning we don't know why but it can be fatal.
