The Race Problem in the United States
In the 19th century, it wasn't uncommon for a politician to talk about separate races. The goal during this time wasn't necessarily to integrate the races. It was to keep the races pure and a lot of people felt like the best way to do that was to separate them. Almost every state of the United States had a law on the books against interracial marriage until the 1960s.
