Alarik was appointed Magistere Militom Per Illirikum, basically the field commander of the Northern army in the Balkans. Stilico made an attempt to bring Alarik to heal by means of a naval expedition to Greece. If forced to choose between Stilico and Alarik, Eutropius, the eunuch regent for Arcadius, would pick Alarik every time.
