Introduction
Bernardine evaristo's novel, girl woman other was on a list of books which are in line to be destroyed by the rapid city area school board in south dakota. It and four other novels are deemed unsuitable reading material for 17 and 18 year olds. The free expression advocacy group pen america says some one thousand 586 books were banned by school boards in the united states last year. Just under half had protagonists or prominent characters who were people of color. Nearly a quarter directly address issues of race and racism while a third explicitly have l g b t c plus themes.
