The Beginning Multiplication Strategy Smart Partial Product
We don't ever want students to get in a rut where whenever they see two digits times two digits. So we make sure that we've just got each number, each part of the number. That's why it's partial products. We're finding all of the partials. But we need teachers from the get go to realize that as soon as students make sense of place value partial products, we want to nudge them to be smart about how they choose partial products.
