There's not maybe some evil dark lord who is sitting in a castle somewhere. Or maybe outside of the the outside of the world that exists and like planning something bad. The women in this book who cast magic are referred to as witches. They are just kind of village magic users who never aspire anything greater than that. And then there's one little nugget that I really liked it, which is where the shadow makes his boat crash on a reef.
