The idea of not being friends with somebody that I work with suggests to me there's a problem that needs fixing. The sins were first written down by this desert monk, Evagrius Ponticus. He wrote these thoughts down, demonic thoughts, but not demons in the way that we would think of them today. And sadness was on this list, melancholy. When they became the cardinal vices, which wasn't until the sixth century, so hundreds and years later, they sort of made their way through the desert fathers. "Anger is usually a mirage for fear, sadness, and shame," she says.
