The Confessions of Augustine
Augustine was a brilliant lawyer who became Bishop of Hippo in North Africa. His theology stresses the power of grace and that there is hope for ordinary imperfect people. The key thing with Augustine is how could he both stress the collective and the inherited almost in a rather kind of African tribal kind of way, and yet also have this massive sense of self-awareness? And I myself think the key there is relationality that he's always thinking in terms of personal relations.
