The Optimism of the Indian Constitution

I think we are a very diverse people not only because there are many religions with many books but also because even within Hinduism there is no single book. So, with such a deep diversity we must look for a document to which we can owe collective allegiance and I believe that the constitution is precisely such a document. It does not expect that everybody will live with that particular ethical or religious viewpoint. But it is basically setting down some terms of common living. And undoing these crippling hierarchies whether based on caste or on creed or on gender is central to the future of the country.
