The Greek boxer who died at the peak of his game has been immortalized in sculpture. What would happen if something like that occurred in the world of modern sports? The closest analogue might be boxing, where one person dies from a brain bleed and another is killed by a concussion. Would they still get the title posthumously? I don't know how that works.
