There is a constant invocation of the sort of divinity of the expression of the general will through the throug people. There's debates among rousseau's scholars about how theologically indebted that conception of the generalWill is to these earlier m mir clearly theistic a debates. So it's conplex that still the central concerns and preoccupations of contemporary liberal democratic theory look back at rousseau in the way in which he anticipates and can contribute to those debates.
