In the Prince, the ruler owns the state and all he has to make sure of is that the people remain contented. He's really not interested in the idea of a community in the Prince. What's required for freedom is not being subject to the will of anybody else. But if you live in a republic, then you are free under the laws, because the laws express your will. They don't constrain it. And so you're good and the common good of anything.
