Twitter was one of the first services to do what you're describing, to be a place where you went in order to broadcast. The fact that it was so focused on broadcasting made it very awkward for a lot of people to adopt. You can sort of look at Twitter and other of the modern platforms read it especially as the next evolution from forums and message boards.
